Ulianovsk City

The city’s recent history is quite interesting. It is the native town of Vladimir Lenin Ulianovks. In the past the name of the city was Simbirsk but when Lenin took power he named it after his mother’s last name. Being as it was the Lenin’s home town, the city became a symbol and a guardian of Lenin’s heritage. The most important museums in town are the houses in which he lived and it is very common to find everywhere landmarks commemorating something related to his life. Also, the city became a stronghold of communist propaganda and one of the most important centers of atheism. As a matter of fact, many local churches were razed during the first years of communism in Russia. Around thirty churches were destroyed including the Catholic temple which was consecrated in 1886 and destroyed in 1936.
